Nostr, which stands for ‘Notes and Other Stuff Transmitted by Relays,’ is an open source protocol for decentralized and censorship-resistant social media. It was pioneered by early developers that include fiatjaf, Ben Arc, and Super Testnet.
Unlike traditional social media, it is not a centralized platform owned by anyone. Instead, it is an open protocol standard that anyone can participate in and build upon.
Nostr users transmit notes to multiple Nostr relays instead of one central authority, which makes them resistant to censorship. Public-key cryptography gives the recipient greater confidence in each note’s authenticity.
To show a social media timeline, a Nostr client calls the Nostr relays the user has chosen in order to find the notes from all others he or she follows.
