Four Causes analysis on a mycelial network

Material cause: The hyphae (branching filamentous structure of fungi), nutrients, organic matter, and soil it interacts with.

Formal cause: Structure and pattern of the network, the connections and growth patterns of the hyphae which can span large areas and connect various plants and trees.

Efficient cause: Processes through which the mycelium grows, reproduces, decomposes organic matter, exchanges nutrients with plants, and communicates within the network.

Final cause:  Ecological roles, such as nutrient cycling, soil formation, plant health maintenance, and perhaps less tangibly, the role it plays in facilitating communication and cooperation within a forest ecosystem.
