Material cause: The physical and chemical components a living system is made of.

Formal cause: Components that allow the system to maintain and reproduce itself. In autopoiesis, this structure is self-determined and self-maintained.

Efficient cause: Processes and mechanisms through which the system reproduces and maintains itself. self-generated and serve to continuously regenerate the system’s components.

Final cause: Fundamental purpose of self-preservation and self-reproduction. Autopoiesis itself is the goal: the continuous creation of oneself.
